This evening I was having a conversation with a friend about the importance of being able to write properly. Or in my case, something vaguely reminiscent of proper grammar and spelling, yet somehow lacking. I tend to strew commas about to add emphasis rather than using them correctly. I punctuate my writing as though I was speaking. IRREGARDLESS, it is important to know what is right even if you do not use it.

Lets take a quick look at one of my least favorite chain email/Hey Look At This website/etc little mind bender.

Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn’t mttaer
in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht
the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl
mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn
mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe.

Yes. Anyone can read the paragraph, yet it is slightly slower than the speed at which you read normally. It says that spelling does not matter. While this is more than likely web-drivel with no basis in fact, it is not something entirely new. With the modern era of Outcome-Based Education as well as spell-checking software there has been a loss of emphasis on spelling in schools. Kat in some instances is as good as Cat. After all, they say, you know what it means. Of course, someone must still write the spell-checking software, so possibly these children would be forever placed into the lower echelons of a “classed” society because they chose an education that was “good enough” rather than being taught what was “correct.”

The only way that you can understand the scrambled words is if you already know the proper spelling. Your mind has to unscramble the letters into an actual word for it to have meaning. If someone doesn’t already know those words then they would be at a loss. Not to mention the fact that the paragraph above is filled with relatively simple words and some words almost magically appear before you read them because of CONTEXT!

Tihs porabbly is not a Crgambdie stduy. I fnid it qutie inlunistg wehn ilittlreae taerlbekmours aemttpt to decveie steociy. Hwevoer I luagh hitsaeyllrcy wehn tehir eorftfs cmoe cnaihrsg dwon auornd tehm. Marbislee feuairls.

A little more challenging, is it not?

Comic from Wizzlefish

I figured that with the tragic loss to Canada in hockey, I should post some comics to bring those northerners back down a notch or two. I know we just let them win so they could have a bit of pride for hosting the Olympics. Americans are too gracious. But since these comics were written by a Canadian it is completely acceptable to use them for insults. Not that I’d really have to worry about offending Canadians. What would they do? Come pour maple syrup on me? Maybe send down a blast of arctic air?

I will leave you with a few classic quotes from Canadian Bacon and Strange Brew. The two greatest movies about Canadians.

“Like maple syrup, Canada’s evil oozes over the United States.”

“Think of your children pledging allegiance to the maple leaf. Mayonnaise on everything. Winter 11 months of the year.”

“I am your father, Luke. Give in to the dark side of the force, you knob.”

With everyone so concerned about privacy today, it should be alarming that people are willing to talk about private matters in a volume more suited for conversations held over the sound of a jet engine.

An actual conversation I overheard last weekend in wal mart:

Woman 1 aisle over: ”one week after she ended things with him she had those pictures on facebook… I printed them all off so even if she takes them down, we’ve got proof… After a judge sees these, there’s no way we don’t get to keep the kids… She wants alimony for sure, but **** I need that money for me…” It went on, but I stopped listening because I had no idea Jerry Springer had such undiscovered talent he was missing.

Seriously though, if you’re dealing with a hugely skanky white trash situation, these are the times you keep the conversations to yourself.

We live in a wonderful time, in a vast and wonderful world. A thousand or so years ago your life was largely decided from the time you were born. If you were born to privilege you had a few choices before you but if you were born to be a pauper, so you were. But even in in those times people were still faced with thousands of decisions every day that could drastically alter their lives. Sure, they couldn’t take a flight to Fiji, but they could punch their mother and somehow I think that would alter their life.

Later today I am going to a QPR Suicide Intervention course. I was bribed into this for extra credit and… well… extra credit is always a fantastic bribe. But when I have talked to people in the past who are dealing with suicidal ideations I cannot help but to think of the millions of choices that this person is discounting. Imagine yourself on the precipice. You are about to do something to end your life, but instead you can simply being your life anew. What is to stop you from stowing away aboard a merchant ship destined for Australia or Italy? What is the worst that could happen? Surely it couldn’t be worse than death.

That’s just an example of the many choices we have. Tomorrow you can start a new career or kick a toddler. It’s all in your hands! It is both encouraging and frustrating to see the many choices that are before us each day, but nothing should hold you back from trying new things. Life is not a point in time, but a progression through it. You won’t ever “get there” so have fun along the way and make that choice that is atypical or goes against your rules.

I for one, will not be taking my advice because I’m naturally a stodgy old coot. But that shouldn’t stop you!

Comic from xkcd.

I apologize for the peppiness and the excessive use of the word “but.”
