What does it mean to you?

Boats are awesome. Boats with a motor? Even better. But don’t get me wrong I would happily take a canoe if you’re offering. Cat and Girl is a different style of art than most. From my viewpoint I think 1950′s.
Is there a true meaning in art or literature or is it subjective to the viewer? If someone writes with the intent to convey one meaning, but the reader takes away a different message, does this make the reader wrong? Sure they took something away from it, but is the subjective lesson they learned wrong because it is not what the author wanted them to take away? Or is the reader correct because art and literature are subjective? If someone doesn’t understand the meaning the author attempts to convey but takes away another message are they wrong? If someone hands you a note written in Russian and you just assume it is a thank you note but it in fact says “If you throw this away I will kill you!” then you may have taken away a different meaning such as “oh, look at the pretty weird letters”, but you are in fact wrong. Is the viewer then always right or is it the author/painter?
