hav-mounties

comic from: Hark, A Vagrant.
A fantastic comic I have recently discovered that is filled with comics based on history and literature. Jane Austen, check. Henry VIII, check. Herodotus, check. And sometimes, like this week… Mounties!

Kate Beaton, the author of the comic and a kindly neighbor from the northlands, writes, “Of all the stereotypes in the world, being branded as polite and extraordinarily nice is maybe the best deal anyone got.” For further insight into Canadian culture I recommend Canadian Bacon with John Candy. It is Michael Moore’s only film I’d ever recommend.

I find stereotypes to be generally quite entertaining. Sure, “stereotyping” is bad, but it allows for so much more comedy. If you don’t want to spend 15 minutes setting up every joke (A terrible malady from which I suffer) you have to operate with certain understood ideas, stereotypes allow for this. Without stereotypes we wouldn’t have the blaxploitation films of the 70s, stoner movies, Martin Lawrence movies, or last but certainly not least Carlos Mencia… Well, maybe stereotypes aren’t such a good thing.
